Cord Blood Banking

Mothers now have the option of having their cord blood collected during
delivery (this blood is otherwise disposed of by the hospital). The
collected cord blood is then sent to one of several companies (see below
links) for long term storage.

The purpose of saving cord blood is that this blood contains stem cells.
Stem cells are undifferentiated or "master cells" and can become any
type of cell. This discovery holds tremendous potential for treating a
